Rally Ireland
June 13 - 15, 2008
Welcome back to the championship for the Rally of Turkey, which under the FIA’s new event rotation rules was not run in 2007. This rally is run in an amazing region around the Mediterranean coastal resort of Antalya and is a climatic wonderland. The weather and the temperatures at the sea level headquarters can be completely different to those in the nearby mountains, and both can change at remarkable speed.
Down on the coast the weather is more stable, happily, for Antalya is considered the gateway to the Turkish Riviera, and the number of tourist visitors due each year exceeds the number that visit the country’s capital city Ankara. The event is based some 40km down the road from Antalya at Kemer. Tourism has come to Kemer only recently. Until 50 years ago there were no roads in the area and the only way to reach the town was by boat.
Once the project to challenge for a place in the World series was declared, there was a fast learning curve for the organisers, in which various locations were tried out, with rallies both on asphalt and on gravel being held, before finally it was decided to run a gravel event based at Antalya. The region is made for the sport, with rocky mountains towering above Kemer, while stretching higher and higher in layers behind is the Taurus range of mountains. The friendliness of the people is legendary and whether it is the beaches, the rocks, the caves, the historical sites, the hills or the pine forests, there are delights for everyone who goes to the Rally of Turkey.
